Al Arabiya has now paid £165,000 ($327,000) in libel damages to Sheikh Rashid Ghannouchi, leader of Tunisia’s principal opposition party An Nahda, for falsely accusing him of being linked to Al-Qaeda. The supposed connection was broadcast on Al Arabiya’s news ticker, claiming that Ghannouchi was among the number of Islamists that Britain has been targeting as a part of its anti-terrorism measures following the July 2005 bombings in London. Ghannouchi’s lawfirm said in a press release that this is “one of the largest libel payouts of the last decade.”
