Highly voltage-resistant ribbon microphone
Crowley and Tripp has introduced a new type of ribbon microphone using Roswelltie advanced material as the ribbon element. Roswellite is described as an advanced carbon nanotube material able to withstand extreme voltages that would destroy the aluminum ribbons used in standard ribbon microphone designs. www.soundwaveresearch.com

SNG uplink system for HDTV applications
ND Satcom has announced the SkyRAY MAS 1900 antenna subsystem with its new 750W High Power Amplifier (HPA) for HD SNG applications. The package is intended for the most demanding applications, including transmission of live sports and other outdoor events. The integrated linearizer increases HPA power capacity and efficiency for transmission of digital signals by 3dB. www.ndsatcom.com

News bike for live coverage
Link Research has unveiled its Newsgathering Motorcycle System designed to provide news teams with fast response times to breaking news stories. Used in conjunction with Link's city center cellular receive system, the bike can be deployed instantly to provide live pictures from its on-board cameras as soon as it gets moving. Once on site, the bike can continue to provide live video and sound from its on-board cameras, or instantly deploy a radio camera (carried in the pannier) which links back to the bike. This allows the operator to get as close as possible to the action.  Features include full audio and video monitoring, 4W RF output for a range of 3¾ miles (6 km), and automatically switched external video/audio input (for tape feeds etc). Power is provided from the bike’s alternator or two detachable camera batteries, with a total running time of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.  Other uses for the News Bike include live 2-ways for fast-breaking news bulletins, a repeater system for wireless cameras, and a helicopter relay/receive point. http://www.linkres.co.uk/

Adapting live HD and SD video for mobiles
Mobile TV viewers will be able to get closer to the action thanks to CloseVU Live with Smart Zoom, a post-production tool that enables broadcasters to adapt live HD and SD video for mobile and other small-screen devices. To operate it, users click on an object or part of the field they want to make larger. The Smart Zoom technology focuses on the object of interest and, within a few seconds, computes the proper framing and parameters. It fine-tunes and stabilizes the image to be properly scaled and formatted for mobile screens. The CloseVU Live system can be integrated directly into the production workflow using SDI or analog video connectors.  www.closevu.com.

Lighting control at your fingertips
ETC’s new Eos lighting console allows you to access programming functions from its keypad and touch screen controls without the need for a mouse. Each device on the system has a discrete workspace. The Eos console includes two 15” LCD touch screens, with 10 definable motorized faders, 3 programmable grand masters, and 999 cue lists. www.etcconnnect.com

Flexible Multi format converter

The Cromatec MADI-xx is a multi-format converter based on a 128 x 128 MADI router with multi-channel audio metering, monitoring, and alarm functionality. The MADI-xx can handle 2 x MADI streams (coaxial and optical). It also has input/output options for analog and AES/EBU, resulting in a flexible, multi-purpose device that may be used for conversion, transmission, and remote monitoring, either locally or over IP. www.chromatec.com

Audio cabling system for outdoor applications
Wireworks has introduced the DT12 audio cabling system, consisting of the DT12 sports broadcast breakout box, trunks, and tails. Designed for rigorous sports applications, the DT12 system can be used for indoor and outdoor sporting events, such as basketball, golf, and football. The Wireworks DT12 welded-steel breakout boxes are a quarter of the size of traditional stageboxes. The in-line DT12 breakout box is engineered to withstand the rigors of being dragged across a stadium or field. The breakout box features male and female DT12 connectors with cover caps. Recessed Neutrik XLR black/gold connectors and dual-sided channel identification allow the box to be used in any orientation. www.wireworks.com.

Canon shows HD remote control robotic camera
Canon has announced its BU-40H remote-control robotic pan-tilt HD camera system for traffic and weather applications. The camera’s pan-tilt head and weatherproof housing can operate from 5 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (-15 to 40 degrees Celsius) and is capable of panning 340 degrees and tilting up 30 degrees and down 50 degrees. The BU-40H features a Canon HD camera equipped with three 1/3-inch (1,670,000-pixel) CCDs and a 20X HD 4.5mm-90mm optical zoom lens. In addition to providing controllability and smooth pan-tilt motion, the BU-40H also offers auto-focus and image stabilizer technology.  It can output HD-SDI and NTSC simultaneously for HD recording and SD monitoring. The housing also meets IP-45 specifications for water-proof and dust-proof efficiency, and has a windshield-wiper blade to keep its lens port clear. The total weight of the pan-tilt system, including camera and housing is about 37lbs (17 kg). www.canonusa.com

Battery shaped like a camera plate for enhanced control
The Sachtler FSB CELL is a 7.2V Li-Ion battery shaped like a camera plate, with the underside fastening onto the fluid head for secure locking and greater control. The FSB CELL extends the camera setup’s sliding range to 8.9 inches (22.6 cm.). The 1.4-lb. (0.63 kg.) battery can be used for miniDV, DV, and HDV cameras, such as Sony, Canon, and Panasonic. The FSB CELL’s high-performance Li-Ion core offers more than eight hours of miniDV camera operation.www.sachtler.com

Low-cost storage unit
Sundance Digital has introduced the Archive Engine, a cost-effective archive storage solution designed for small broadcast stations. Archive Engine enables users to retrieve archive footage while spending less time recovering video and managing storage assets. The hardware is an Avid-built, 16-drive storage chassis. The unit features 500Gb SATA drives and a hardware RAID controller. The standard configuration is a 15-drive RAID 5 set with one hot spare. Usable storage is 6.37Tb. The Archive Manager application supervises media on the on-air server and nearline storage, deciding which clips should be sent and retrieved from the Archive Engine.  www.sundancedigital.com.

Shooting from the skies

SpaceCam Systems, Inc. has created SnakeHead, a periscope lens system for aviation cinematography. Horizontally-oriented, computer-controlled, and gyroscopically-stabilized, the SnakeHead periscope can be fixed to the nose or tail cone of the aircraft. With nearly full spherical coverage (360 degrees pan and tilt), SnakeHead uses solid-state flight attitude sensors and a digital signal processor, enabling the camera aircraft to perform extreme maneuvers while filming. The entire optical system includes electrical heaters and a continuous nitrogen purge system that circulates the inert gas through the lens array in order to avoid condensation. SnakeHead allows for a 3Xplus zoom capability in two ranges for 35mm film and HD video use. www.spacecam.com.
