Emirates Radio Network (ERN), owned by the multi-media company Emirates Media Inc (EMI), has announced plans to launch a new English-language radio station this year in addition to revamping its existing channels Radio 1 and Radio 2. EMI said in March that it has agreed to give over control of the two English-language radio stations to another Dubai company, Al Nisr Publishing LLC. "We're sure this is a positive move. This partnership will enhance the radio industry in the UAE. Radio 1 and Radio 2 will be strengthened and a new channel will be launched," Raja Halabi, EMI’s commercial director, was quoted as saying. The new deal with Al Nisr Publishing LLC will cover editorial and advertising operations. Halabi said the new radio channel would be called Radio 3, adding that the nature of its programming has not been decided yet. "This is just the start. We are looking into other business ventures between EMI and Al Nisr Publishing that will be announced later," Halabi said. These future launches are likely to include radio stations in a variety of languages. The UAE has about 20 radio stations - more than any other country in the Arab World, according to Gulf News. EMI is the owner of the UAE’s Al Ittihad newspaper, the magazines Zahrat Al Khaleej and Majed as well as three satellite television channels and seven radio stations. EMI also runs five internet websites.
