Racism sentence for Danish radio

by
A Danish judge has handed down a 14-day suspended prison sentence to a radio station owner found guilty of racism directed at Muslims. Following the bomb attacks on the London transport system in July last year, Kaj Vilhelmsen had called for all Muslims to be driven out or exterminated. The broadcast on Copenhagen’s Radio Holger resulted in the station’s license being revoked by the Radio and Television Board, although it was later reinstated. When passing sentence on Vilhelmsen, the judge gave weight to an earlier conviction for racism in 2001 after Vilhelmsen wrote that the rape of non-Muslim women formed an intrinsic part of Islamic culture. Ellen Vinther, spokesperson for Radio Holger, which she describes as a Danish nationalist station, told MEB Journal that the station would not accept the sentence passed on Vilhelmsen and that it had appealed to a higher court for a review of the case. The appeal is expected to be heard in June this year. Vilhelmsen continues to broadcast on Radio Holger, delivering what Vinther described as “patriotic” shows.
