US gets Hip-Hop VOD channel

by

A Hip-Hop video-on-demand (VOD) channel called DoD – Def on Demand – was launched in the US in November by entrepreneur Russell Simmons and partners in the Simmons Lathan Media Group. The channel, available as a free service on Comcast’s ON DEMAND channel in several major US cities, will feature Hip-Hop music, documentaries, fashion and comedy specials, and urban culture programming. “With over $1 trillion a year in spending power, Hip-Hop consumers, ages 13-34, have become the driving force of a great movement in popular culture by uniting fans across racial lines,” said DoD CEO Will Griffin in a statement. Revenue will be generated from sponsorship deals with Coca-Cola, General Motors and Reebok for branded-entertainment programs and cross-promotional marketing campaigns.
